Colon Cancer Screening
ARE YOU OVER 50?
HAVE YOU HAD A COLONOSCOPY YET?
Carlisle Digestive Disease Associates encourages everyone over the age of 50 to get screened for colorectal cancer, the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths for both men and women.
Get the facts:
- Each year in the US, over 136,000 people are diagnosed with colorectal cancer and more than 50,000 are expected to die from it. Screening can save MORE THAN HALF of those lives.
- According to the American College of Gastroenterology, 5 in 100 people will get colorectal cancer in their lifetime – even with NO family history of the disease.
- Colon cancer is an equal opportunity disease: Women have the same risk as men.
- African Americans have a higher risk of being diagnosed with colorectal cancer and should begin screening at age 45.
There are no excuses…you can reduce your risk of colorectal cancer if you get screened starting at the age of 50. Colorectal cancer is preventable if polyps that lead to the cancer are detected and removed. Colon polyps and early colon cancer can develop silently without symptoms. Waiting until symptoms occur can mean the cancer is more advanced and less likely to be curable.
Is it the bowel prep you fear most? Newer preps have made it easier and less time-consuming.
Are you afraid of the procedure? You will be sedated and won’t feel a thing! Your colonoscopy will be performed at Carlisle Endoscopy Center by a Board-Certified Gastroenterologist.
OPEN ACCESS ENDOSCOPY AVAILABLE: You can be referred directly to our endoscopy center without a prior office visit with the Gastroenterologist. Speak to your primary care physician about this program.
The physicians at Carlisle Endoscopy Center consistently exceed national benchmarks related to quality of colonoscopy, such as adenoma detection rate (ADR), as shown in the table below. An adenoma is a type of polyp that could potentially become cancerous. ADR represents the number of patients in whom a precancerous polyp was identified and removed during a screening colonoscopy. According to the national benchmark, physicians providing a high-quality colonoscopy should have an ADR greater than 30% in males and greater than 20% in females.
We’re proud to report that the Gastroenterologists at Carlisle Endoscopy Center consistently exceed this benchmark, so you can feel confident that any precancerous polyps will be found and removed.
